Facilities
Charterhouse Club nestles in the beautiful grounds of Charterhouse School. The Club has extensive facilities for members with a 25m pool, a well equipped and staffed fitness suit and a wide range of exercises class to suit all fitness levels. Our sports hall is used extensively for indoor sports, an all weather running track and tennis courts are all available to Club members.
Sports Hall
The Sports Hall is a multi-activity area, with a central partition that can be removed for large events or activities and a number of curtains which can be used to divide the space up further.
Special hi-tech flooring has been used in the sports hall which not only provides the best possible grip for playing sport but also reduces the risk of injury caused by impact damage to knees, ankles, etc. Sports Hall activities can be booked by members up to a week in advance for a minimal charge.
By varying the use of the floor space, a combination of activities is available including: basketball, badminton, netball, volleyball, indoor hockey, 5-a-side football, cricket nets, table tennis and trampolining.
A spacious viewing gallery also allows spectators to be involved in activities from a safe vantage point.
Tennis Courts
Between April & August each year we convert our all weather pitch to 12 full-size all-weather tennis courts.
Members can book courts up to a week in advance for a minimal charge. Alternatively, a separate Tennis Membership is available on a Single, Joint/Family, Junior or Student basis. This one-off fee allows unlimited tennis during all advertised periods.
If you are struggling with your game we first suggest you look at this list of back to basic tips and make sure you are doing all ten of these things correctly.
1. Watching the Ball-It is crucial to watch the ball all the way to your racquet.
2. Moving Your Feet- You must have quick feet. Don’t run around the court with long strides, take short quick steps.
3. Keeping Your Head up when you Serve-Keeping your head up helps you watch the ball all the way to the point of contact.
4. Following Through- The follow through is one of the most important aspects of the most common strokes in tennis.
5. Turning Your Shoulders- Turning your shoulders helps you get your racquet back into the right position.
6. Step Into Your Volleys- Stepping into your volleys is a great way to make sure that you get shoulder turn and a lot more power into your volleys.
7. Pointing at the Overhead- When you point at the overhead you create a target.
8.Getting the Racquet Back Early- Late swings account for the majority of poor shots.
9. Using Your Hips with the Two-Handed Backhand- Using your hips gives you a compact but solid backhand.
10. Develop Match Play- If you can play as well in a match as in practice you will be successful.
There you have it, the top ten to do list for tennis players. It is very easy to get away from good fundamentals, but just as easy to get back to these good fundamentals. Implement these ten tips into your game and you will be back on the road to happy hitting.

Running for Health Benefits
Studies have shown the health benefits of running to be tremendous, reducing your chances of everything from the common cold to cancer. Running is among the best aerobic exercises for physical conditioning of your heart and lungs. It helps ensure the efficient flow of blood and oxygen throughout the body, things that are proven to help to decrease the risk of a heart attack.
Running — like other types of exercise — is a great stress-reliever and may even relieve mild depression. Many runners enjoy reaching the “runner’s high” — that euphoric, clear, and calm state they feel after a long run.
Research shows that healthy adults who exercise regularly are generally happier than those who don’t. As a runner, you’ll likely feel more energetic and creative.
Running helps you improve your fitness and stamina. As a weight-bearing exercise, running also increases bone density, which can fend off osteoporosis.
Although running is a healthy activity, you should get medical clearance before you start a running program.
Running for Weight Loss
Weight loss is one of the biggest reasons why people start running. As one of the most vigorous exercises out there, running is an extremely efficient way to burn calories and drop pounds. Running burns about 100 calories per mile for a 150-pound person. Because running also builds muscle mass, your resting metabolism will increase, which means that you’ll burn more calories at rest. If you combine running with a healthy diet, you’ll definitely notice a difference in the way you look and feel.
Asclepeum
Here at Charterhouse Club we have adopted this name to represent our own sanctuary where you can experience different forms of holistic treatment. Fully trained sports and holistic therapists are available offering the following treatments to members and non-members:
Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy
The benefits of this type of massage, are numerous as it can be applied in different ways including, muscle rehabilitation, stress and tension, pre or post exercise and cellulite reduction (combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise regime) or just simple relaxation.
Craniosacral Therapy
Not to be confused with Cranial Osteopathy, this technique is a gentle, non-invasive, manipulative therapy. Craniosacral Therapy relies, to a large extent, upon the patient’s natural self-corrective physiological activities. Examination is carried out by testing for movement in the various parts of the craniosacral system. This is an excellent therapy for treating areas of intense pain, inflamed joints and persistent ailments and is also extremely relaxing. Common complaints such as stress, headaches, migraines, digestive disorders, IBS, on-going pain in muscles and joints, back problems, menstrual and menopausal problems may also be helped. In newborns, this form of therapy may permit the release of subtle strains and restrictions caused during birth and also in infants and children, hyperactivity, colic, feeding and sleeping problems and faulty development may often be helped.
Aromatherapy
This is a light massage used to apply specific essential oils. These produce a wide range of therapeutic effects that help to restore the body’s natural balance. Aromatherapy is a type of complementary medicine and is extremely relaxing.
Reflexology
Massage This is a technique used to help relieve pain and dysfunction within the body by applying pressure to relevant points on the feet. Reflexology is an ancient form of therapy dating from as far back as 2300BC.
It is based on the principle that there are ‘reflexes’ or energy channels in the feet which relate to every organ and function in the body.
Problems in the body are reflected in the feet by sensitivity or crystalline-like lumps in the related area.
Reiki
Reiki is a very relaxing treatment simply using energy as a form of healing.
Bowen
The Bowen Technique allows the body to reset and heal itself. A treatment consists of a series of gentle ‘rolling’ moves on the skin (or through light clothing) with the client lying down. Frequent pauses between moves give the body time to respond and process the treatment. There are many theories as to how the Bowen Technique works but none that completely explain its holistic effects and often outstanding results. Very relaxing, the Bowen Technique can also be extremely effective for musculo-skeletal problems such as back pain, sports injuries and many other ailments and discomforts.
